Battlefield Hardline test: The classic war scenario has been spent, now it is the turn of the police. With Battlefield Hardline developer Visceral Games wants to break new ground and put on an unusual campaign. Whether the new scenario is a hit or if Battlefield shoots into its own knee, we will show you in the following test.
Battlefield Hardline Test: Story and Design
In the story, Battlefield Hardline goes an unusual way. The idea of a shooter playing in drug-addicted Miami and using a police team as a main actor is as refreshing as it is unused - quite contrary to the old-established war scenarios.
Battlefield Hardline test: Gameplay
The Battlefield Hardline singleplayer campaign offers a lot of potential, but it's still unused. The characters look flat and uninspired for a video game - but if you compare the Cop series, which is called by Hardline as a model, they are well hit.
Battlefield Hardline test: Multiplayer
Also the design is rather simple than detailed. Comprehensible, Hardline does not play on gigantic places like the predecessors, but in the backyards of Miami. Nevertheless, the last whistle is missing, especially to the level design.
Battlefield Hardline: Official Launch Gameplay Trailer
The gameplay at Battlefield Hardline makes a lot different, but unfortunately not always right. This is a way to force crooks with a dashed police force to resist arrest - a pacifist approach to ending the mission brings extra points.
Although this idea is good in itself, it will lead to an absurdity at the latest in the second half of the campaign. Already at first the behavior of the AI is irritating, which can be fixed in droves - if the correct procedure is used - without even pulling the weapon. The fact that a mission accomplished on this way offers new weapons as a reward does not appear logical either at first or at a second glance.
The core of each Battlefield series ego-shooter is, however, not the solo campaign, but the multiplayer mode. And here, Battlefield Hardline finally unfolds its full potential and shows how good speedy police action can be.
The fun also has its drawbacks here: some spawn points are unfairly distributed or smaller bugs, which tarnish the atmosphere, but the new modes like "Hotwire" bring fresh air into the shooter genre.
Battlefield Hardline could be a fantastic game: an unused setting and good gameplay ideas form the basis for an excellent shooter. But the implementation of the police scenario weakens especially in the singleplayer.
Only the multiplayer manages to capture the atmosphere properly and offers fast-paced action from front to back, which is really fun. The disappointment of the many unused potential remains, however, so that Battlefield Hardline goes at best as a satisfying game.
