The Canon EOS 70D is designed as a DSLR for beginners. So far, the EOS 60D has been the bridge between the Canon models of the entry-level class and the semiprofessional-oriented mid-range models EOS 7D and 6D. In addition, the EOS 60D, introduced at photokina 2010, echoed the era of adjustable monitors at Canon.
The AF technology of the EOS 70D
In the case of the Canon EOS 70D, the nominal resolution was increased from 18 to 20 megapixels and the standard image speed compared to the EOS 60D - from about 5 to 7 frames per second. Up to 65 JPEG and 16 RAW recordings should be possible in direct succession (manufacturer specifications). The resulting computing power is achieved by a Digic-5 image processor with 14-bit signal processing. ISO values can be adjusted between 100 and 12 800 (expandable to ISO 25 600) with the Canon EOS 70D.
Clearly added to tempo
However, the Canon EOS 70D has the most pronounced focus on autofocus technology. The phase AF active in SLR viewfinder operation now has 19 AF points, all of which are cross sensors, for objectives up to a light intensity of 1: 5.6. The central AF measuring field is designed as a highly sensitive diagonal cross sensor for a light intensity of up to 1: 2.8. In this respect, the EOS 70D is equal to the larger sister EOS 7D and surpasses the EOS 60D, which needs to have 9 AF points, including a central cross sensor.
Barely modified case
Even more technical sophistication promises, of course, the new Dual Pixel CMOS AF (we reported), the Canon with the EOS 70D presented for the first time. The goal was a significantly accelerated focus in the live view and video mode compared to the EOS 60D and other SLR cameras. Every 20 million effective pixels of the EOS 70D consist of two photodiodes, which are separately read out for the phase AF and for generating image data.
Second Canon model with integrated WLAN
The first practice tests with the Canon EOS 70D - due to the pre-production model not yet confirmed by measurements - point to an unusually fast-working sensor AF, which remains barely behind the phase AF in the viewfinder operation. Particularly pronounced is the Tempovorteil when working with continuous AF. This can be used when shooting moving objects in live-view mode, or when shooting movies.
In combination with an STM lens (EFS 3,5-5,6 / 18-55 mm IS STM) the permanent autofocus of the Canon EOS 70D worked without jerks or pumps and almost silently - a milestone compared to other Canon models and A challenge for the few competitors with also fast contrast AF like the Olympus OM-D E-M5 (test).
A little surprising is that Canon still offers the "Quick mode" with 19-point AF and dark-pause during the AF-methods in the live-view - in the face of the fast sensor-AF actually dispensable. The sensor AF can be configured as a multi-field and single-point autofocus or with face detection including AF tracking.
The Canon EOS 70D has a slightly smaller 5 mm narrower case compared to the EOS 60D and the weight remains unchanged at 755 g. The manufacturer describes the material mix used as "aluminum alloy with glass fiber-reinforced polycarbonate". The body of the Canon EOS 70D is very handy due to its rough surface coating and is sealed against dust and splashing water. The built-in flash can also be used as a master in wireless flashing in E-TTL-II technology.
In the case of the field coverage, the DSLR has increased slightly with 98 percent compared to the EOS D60 (96 percent), but not with the effective search magnification, which is still at 0.56 fold. However, the LCD screen is new, which allows the fading of a grid into the viewfinder, but the viewfinder screens can not change in contrast to the EOS 60D.
The swivel and swivel-mounted TFT monitor of the Canon EOS 70D offers a high resolution of 346,700 RGB pixels and is designed as a touch screen. In addition, the camera has the class-like LC display on the top with assigned function buttons (AF, Drive, ISO, exposure measurement method)
Fortunately, the Canon EOS 70D is the second Canon model after the EOS 6D with integrated WLAN. The app "EOS Remote" lets you convert a smartphone or tablet with Android operating system to the camera remote control with live image control. And if you want, you can also use the smartphone to put the images online. The EOS remote app is already available in the App Store in an updated form, but the pre-production model has not been able to establish the connection.
With the number and arrangement of the controls there are some changes, which go beyond purely cosmetic corrections: New is with the Canon EOS 70D the AF button between the shutter button and the front dial. This button is used to select three autofocus configurations: AF field automatic with 19 fields, manual AF zone selection and single field AF. In the case of zone or single-field AF, you can comfortably select AF fields or zones using the rotary dial or directional buttons (left / right / diagonal).
Captured by the Canon EOS 7D has been the convenient changeover lever for live view and video mode with integrated start / stop button to the right of the viewfinder. It simplifies the changeover to the film (max 1,920 x 1,080 p), because the video mode does not have to be selected as a recording mode on the program wheel as with other Canon models.

Buying advice: What to look for when purchasing a DSLR
The program wheel of the Canon EOS 70D can be rotated only after pressing a release button and provides access to the available exposure programs, including full, program, time and aperture modes, manual time / aperture adjustment, seven scene modes (SCN), and an individual memory (C ).
Easily switch from photo to video recordings
The TTL aperture measurement of the Canon EOS 70D leaves nothing to be desired with 63 dual-layer measuring systems. In addition to matrix and integral measurement (center-weighted), the digital camera offers a choice between selective measurement (approx. 7.7 percent of the image field) and spot measurement (approx 3 percent). Automatic exposures are now possible with up to seven shots, and up to nine shots can be superimposed in the multi-exposure mode, and there is also an HDR automatic system based on three individual exposures for which a spreading of one, two and three bezels can be adjusted.
The successful combination of function buttons, set-up wheels, clear main menu and quick info monitor ensures easy operation with the EOS models. A central control element for the EOS 60D / 70D is the combined rotary wheel with directional rocker and set button in the center. This means that you have everything that is required for each operation.
For example, in the Quick menu, use the directional rocker to select the function and change the desired setting by wheel. An unbureaucratic concept, which is considerably enhanced by the alternative touch operation. Often, typing with the finger is the faster method compared to the fiddly-small directional rocker within the wheel.
First Class Operation
Test Conclusion
It is also possible to determine the AF point with the fingertip in the live view, which leads to a recording when the touch trigger is activated. Earlier touch screen muffles should not be mocked by this smartphone, which is now used by the smartphone.
Overview Canon: All EOS DSLRs in the test
With the EOS 70D, Canon has already refined the already convincing concept of the EOS 60D (test) and raised it to a new technical level. The Dual Pixel CMOS AF is already a clear advance in the pre-production model.
The viewfinder operation with phase AF is not (yet) obsolete - but the gain in speed and focusing accuracy during live viewing and shooting is considerable. One can be curious whether the EOS 70D can also set new accents in the picture quality. We are eagerly waiting for a serial device.
