Sony RX100 ll in the test

One of the main differences to the predecessor model sits on the top of the Sony Cybershot RX 100 II: a flash shoe, which can include not only a flash unit, but also an electronic viewfinder. Inside, the camera now has WLAN and an NFC chip, Sony has also updated the Exmor CMOS sensor according to his own information. Like the previous model, it has an effective resolution of 20.2 megapixels for an inch.

Focusing with magnifying glass

The approx. 250 gram digital camera plug in a compact housing of 102 x 62 x 39 mm. With the weight, the Sony Cybershot RX100 II definitely makes the jackentasche properly bullet. The camera surface is velvety smooth overall. Only at the right thumb position is a 15 x 16 mm small structured surface. By pressing the thumb, the body is a bit better to hold, but the grip is really different.

The main setting wheel on the camera top has a strong rippling and snaps. For protection against unintended adjustment, it is sunk and almost flush with the camera surface. The trigger has a diameter of eight millimeters. The other buttons with 4.5 millimeters, on the other hand, are very small, as are their markings. Here, a lot of fingertip feeling is required. The best way to get used to the keys is to use the fingernails.

The main setting of the RX100 II offers the settings P, A, S, and M, which are known from SLRs, and there are a lot of other options in the extensive main menu. Often a fast change of the camera settings is necessary and one can not rumge in the depths of the menu. Sony has cleverly solved this and for the practical application, the main menu with an Fn key on the essentials. Up to seven setting values can be individually stored on this function key. The desired value can be displayed and set on the display by a push-button.

Ideal for network

The 3-inch display has a resolution of 307,200 RGBW pixels. The picture is sharp and the colors are brilliant. In contrast to the previous model, the display can now be tilted upwards by approx. 90 ° and downwards by approx. 60 °. This allows even unusual shooting positions to be mastered. Fonts and texts are still good to read, but the displayed symbols are quite small and sometimes hard to recognize.

The focal length of 28 to 100 mm (KB) is limited to the essentials. The light intensity of 1.8 with the short focal range can be seen, but that is, but with a modest 100 mm (KB) drops to 4.9, is a little surprised. The manual focus is well solved: the lens is surrounded by a knurled ring with a diameter of 58 mm. This ring is freely rotatable in both directions. This is used to set the "Manual focus" setting. Depending on the camera setting, when the focus ring is touched, a magnifying glass is also used to make the focus easier.

The flash can not be set "by hand". Only after pressing the flash button on the four-way button and pressing the release button does it jump out of the case. Only the way back into the housing is by finger pressure. The flash shoe now also allows the use of stronger external flash units in the RX100 II. Even if the rather compact RX100 II looks like an accessory of the flash unit and not the other one.

Additional accessories can be attached to the flash connector. Optional an electronic viewfinder - with a UVP of 450 euros but soon as much as the camera - and a stereo microphone. Video records the camera in MPEG-4 or AVCHD format, with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels at a speed of up to 60 frames per second.

To evaluate the video quality, Sony offers two official sample videos at

The DSC-RX100 II can be connected via WLAN to the home network. Particularly convenient is the uncomplicated image transmission on the iPhone, iPad or Android smartphone. With just one click, the connection is established when the mobile device is NFC-enabled. Then the mobile phone can also be used as a handy remote control. We could not test the self-adhesive ring with filter thread, but this sounds rather unprofessional compared to the other equipment.

Our test method: To test cameras

The processing of the RX100 II is solid. A piece of jewelry is the buttercup-type focusing ring. Also the monitor mounting and mechanics promise long durability. The camera makes an overall good impression. The sensitivity to light can be set in a range of ISO 100-250000, and the images are actually still useful up to ISO 1.600, but then you have to cut them off. And the main difference in the picture quality of the predecessor model SonyRX100 (test) is actually in the high sensitivities between ISO 1,600 and 6,400

Because these high sensitivities in compact cameras - in contrast to SLRs - do not contribute to the overall assessment (otherwise 90% of the tested compacts would be massively degraded), the Sony RX100 II in the ColorFoto ranking ends just before the predecessor model. But this is not to be deceived. If you are more likely to use sensitivities between ISO 800 and ISO 6,400, the new model will work better. If you can do without, as well as on folding monitor, Blitzschuh and Wi-Fi, saves with the older RX100 a good bar money. In the meantime it has already been available for just over 500 euros. The RX100 II costs 750 euros.

Superior image quality

How to find the right digital camera

In the evaluation of the laboratory results, the RX100 II shows curves close to the ideal line. The dead-leave curves show that the contrasts are not artificially raised and the noise behavior is excellent, even at ISO 1,600 still. Our test recordings provide images with a detail richness that we otherwise only see with SLRs and high-quality system cameras. The comparatively strong sharpness loss (330-430 Lp / BH, depending on the sensitivity) towards the corners could be even better. But this is whining at a high level.

Test Conclusion

The picture quality of the Sony Cybershot RX100 II is simply for a compact camera simply surpassing and also the equipment is right, so that the approximately 750 euros appear appropriate. Buying picture quality.
