Sony A7 and A7R announced: Full format now mirrorless

With the Sony A7 and Sony A7R Sony wants to combine the characteristics of classic SLR cameras with the advantages of modern mirrorless system cameras. The two new Sony Alpha models use new full-format sensors. The Alpha 7 is equipped with a 35.8 x 23.9 mm Exmor sensor with 24 megapixel resolution. The 35.9 x 24 mm Exmor CMOS sensor of the Alpha 7R offers 36 megapixels and is trimmed to the highest imaging performance. Therefore, there is no low-pass filter that could affect the resolution in front of the sensor.

New technologies for the bundling of light should contribute to the maximum optical performance as well as an "on-chip design", which closes the gaps between the individual pixels. For series exposures the Sony A7R with a maximum of 4 b / s is somewhat slower than the Sony A7 with 5 B / s because of the larger amounts of data.

Price and availability

The Alpha 7 and Alpha 7R features a new Bionz-X processor that processes photos and full-HD video in real-time. It also allows uncompressed signal output via HDMI to external devices such as monitor, Sony 4K Ultra HD Bravia TV devices with Triluminos color reproduction or a mobile hard drive.

Specifications

The Bionz-X is also responsible for the fast hybrid AF of the Sony A7. The phase detection AF adjusts the sharpness by 117-field measurement, then the contrast AF in 25 fields determines the precise focus point. Sony calls the A7 autofocus one of the fastest in full-format cameras at all. For portraits, the Sony A7 focusses on the eyes, if desired.

The Sony A7R offers only Sensor-Contrast-AF, since it only uses all sensor pixels for the image generation and therefore has to do without the sensor phase detection. With its automatic and manual exposure functions and digital effects such as auto-HDR, contrast optimization and exposure sequences, the two new alphas are similar to other Sony cameras.

The Sony A7 and Sony A7R can be operated with their horizontal two adjustment wheels on the top as well as two other right front and rear completely classic. In addition, there are the digital camera-style buttons and a rotary knob on the back.

In the housing bracket, Sony farewell to the optical prism and, like in the NEX-7, uses a high-resolution OLED viewfinder with 786,432 RGB pixels. In the case of the alphas, it is arranged centrally above the optical axis. In addition, a 3-inch LCD monitor with 307,200 RGB pixels can be folded through 90 ° upwards or 45 ° downwards. Both housings are splash-proof and made of a magnesium alloy.

Thanks to WLAN and NFC, the images from the Sony A7 and Sony A7R can be shared via smartphone or tablet. A short touch is enough to connect. With the "Play Memories Camera App" Sony offers free and payment apps for image processing. With Smart Remote Control, the cameras can be remotely controlled by the smartphone.

To use the full KB format of the Sony A7 and Sony A7R, new lenses with a correspondingly larger image circle diameter are required. The first five new lenses from Sony and Zeiss come under the "FE" type designation.

These are for the beginning the standard zooms Sony FE 3,5-5,6 / 28-70 mm OSS and Zeiss FE 4 / 24-70 mm ZA OSS, the wide angle Zeiss FE T * 2,8 / 35 ZA mm, The standard lens FE T * 1.8 / 55 mm ZA as well as the telephoto zooms FE 4 / 70-200 mm OSS and 2,8 / 70-200 mm G SSM II. Edge shading, imaging errors and distortion are corrected for each lens camera adapter. Since the new Alpha models do not have a sensor-shift image stabilizer, image stabilization is objectively dependent.

The A-lenses for the previous Sony full-format DSLRs can be re-used with the LAEA adapter, which compensates for the larger footprint. Existing Sony NEX lenses can still be used on the A7 models with a limited picture circle. As an optional accessory, Sony offers the VG-C1EM high-definition grip that holds two batteries.
