7-Zip is a free program that allows you to pack and unpack files. Packed files have many advantages. They are smaller than the originals and can therefore be sent faster via the Internet. You can package whole folders full of files into a single archive file and send them conveniently. 7-Zip should always be used if the files of the standard archive files ZIP and RAR are too large or large office files - elaborately designed Word documents, extensive Excel calculations, images, music and movies-stored Powerpoint presentations Mail. Depending on the data to be archived, 7-Zip shrinks the original files to up to one third of its original size. You can control the unpacking with 7-Zip via the context menu of the right mouse button. Even the extraction of CD / DVD image files in ISO format is possible with 7-Zip without problems. On request, you can create simple, self-extracting SFX archives with 7-Zip. The recipient does not even need a pack program like 7-Zip to extract the archive on his PC.


7-Zip offers important additional functions such as self-extracting and AES-encrypted archives, which can only be extracted after entering a password. The software integrates with the Windows Explorer context menu, so you can easily unpack archives by right-clicking. 7-Zip handles drag & drop, so you can easily drag and drop files to the 7-Zip program window. The function for packing selected files and directories can also be found in the context menu of Windows Explorer. The already good compression rate of 7-Zip can be optimally optimized with the advanced settings, which affects however the packing speed. During the work, a status bar informs you of the expected duration of the process.


In addition, 7-Zip is very efficient - thus generated ZIP archives are up to 10 percent smaller than those of other programs. 7-Zip is available in nearly 90 other languages. Thanks to a command line version it can also be integrated into own programs.
