Amazingly light and handy feels the new iPad mini from Apple in the Praxistest. The manufacturer manufactures it in black anodized and also in white with aluminum back – thus in the same “color” versions as the iPhone 5. Apple has thus given the pressure of the market a little bit and puts the strong Android competition with its 7th And 8-inch tablets to the right device.
Pixels, pixels, pixels
In addition to the tablets of Samsung and Asus, the main competitors are mainly the Google Nexus 7 and Amazons Kindle Fire HD, mainly because they offer very good services for little money. In the Windows 8 warehouse one looks 7- or 8-inch devices in vain. There are announcements and deliveries of 10-inch and larger devices.

In a nutshell, the iPad mini is a smaller iPad 2, but garnishes with newer components in the radio, sound, camera and dock connector. When you measure the performance with the speed app Geekbench, the iPad mini with a value of 750 meters ranks pretty exactly with the iPad 2 and iPad 3. It is slightly faster than an iPhone 4S and iPod touch 5th generation, which come to about 630 to 650 meters. An iPad 4 reaches 1769 points!
A real iPad
Apple has installed in the iPad mini "only" its A5 baptism processor with 800 MHz clock. For the comparison: in the iPad 4 is an A6X with 1.4 GHz. Since there are only a few applications for iOS that demand real performance (except games, of course), processor performance is sufficient to display the interface and apps smoothly. In the end you have to be aware that you get "old food" at this place. A Google Nexus 7 at the Geekbench 1363 points and costs only 200 euros. Inside, a 4-core and no 2-core processor works like the iPad mini.

The same is true for the display. Again, Apple saves, because 1024 x 768 points are not synonymous with 7-inch devices "state-of-the-art". Resolutionstechnisch among them are only pots with 800 x 600 points for 150 euros, which anyway does not want to have any. The already mentioned Google device comes with 1280 x 800, also the Kindle Fire-HD controls 1280 x 800 points.
On the other hand, it can be argued that 1024 x 768 points on just under eight inches are quite fine and Apple would do well to settle the device with a Fielmann voucher. In the editorial department, no one missed a higher resolution. In the case of films in size, the resolution does not matter anyway, the offered 160 dpi is enough.
It is more difficult to keep the buttons on the edge. In many cases it is happening that you have to make sure that the buttons on iPad 2 or iPad 4 are secure for the first time. This has two reasons: On the one hand, the buttons are naturally much smaller. So you have to aim more precisely. On the other hand, Apple has built a "the thumbs hold the iPad" detection. Therefore, if you hit the entire thumb with your right hand on the iPad, it does not trigger a function. The iPad mini recognizes more than just a fingertip on the touch glass pane and assumes that the wide finger only wants to hold the device. So if you press buttons on the screen, you should not use too much finger, but only a fingertip, otherwise nothing will work.
Test: Notebooks up to 550 Euro
The viewing angle stability of the 7.9 inch Anzezige is very good. Even from extreme angles, the contents can be easily recognized, no color distortions occur. The brightness of the screen is suitable for all occasions - except for direct sunlight.
Despite the mini-format, you get a real iPad running all iPad apps - and of course all iPod touch and iPhone apps. In the rest of the technology, Apple has not let itself. At the rear, a 5-MPixel camera makes quite usable recordings (though without LED light, which remains the Apple smartphones reserved), on the front side it is a HD camera with 720p resolution. Videos can be made with the 5 MPixel camera in full-HD, with the processor providing for image stabilization.
The panorama function is missing (unlike iPod touch and iPhone). Actually incomprehensible, if one already a 5-MPixel camera built-in. Resolution, main memory size and performance are similar to an iPod touch of the 5th generation, and the practical function is not missing.
Amazingly good is the sound from the two stereo speakers, which are nonsensically not installed on the left and right (if the iPad crosswise, as watching movies), but left and right of the dock connector. So they are not even two centimeters apart - for real stereo too little, of the sound volume for so small sound transducers but quite properly.
Conclusion
As in the iPhone 5, Apple has given the small iPad the latest wireless technology. It works with the WLAN in the 2.4 and 5 GHz band, which is not self-evident in mobile devices. Also with the iPad mini is that only the mobile version also has GPS. If you do not pay the LTE surcharge of 130 euros, you do not have to do GPS navigation.
In the editorial department, we had trouble starting with the iPad mini a tethering connection to an iPhone 4S. Unfortunately it was not clear whether this was a single case and was only around the environment or whether the WLAN is basically more wobbly.
Test: Design Ultrabooks
The case of the iPad mini makes a very solid impression, although it feels so easy. It can be held comfortably with one hand - even over a longer period of time. This is definitely not possible with an iPad. With a height of 7 mm it is very flat. The case backside with the black iPad mini feels like plastic, but is made of anodised aluminum. Finger tapers are instantly visible.
The runtime on the first day was as expected from an iPad. Directly taken out of the packaging and started with 95%, after about 6 hours of testing, playing and testing, there was still 33% charge in the upper right of the display. The promised 10 hours of continuous running seems to create the iPad mini.
Interesting is the comparison with the latest iPod touch: it costs with 32 GB of flash memory only 10 euros less. Or in other words, if you're interested in an iPod touch, get an iPad for 10 euros more. Since the touch is especially interesting for children and young people as a game console, the iPad mini, which is equally suitable for this, becomes a serious competition. However, the iPad mini at the entry price is only equipped with 16 GB of memory.
Whoever gets the iPad mini in the hand is noticeably impressed. The format convinces many, because the combination of the compact dimensions, light weight and quite good display make the device very handy. This fits in every handbag, without bulging. Compared to a typical black notebook scuffle, it's flatter, but just a little heavier.
Practice: Support Odyssey at Apple
One can hold it long in one hand, without which the arm forcibly sinks down. The low weight makes it also a good companion on trips (which of course applies to all 7-inch devices). The endurance is just as good as with big iPads or the competition.
The big plus in contrast to Android tablets is however: It works all iPad applications. So you do not have just a small selection or only highly zoomed smartphone apps that work on the device.
If your own visual strength is not as fresh as in a young age, the pixels on the screen of the iPad mini could be too small. Even if you have big hands and fingers, it is a bit harder to get your hands together. This is the disadvantage of scaling a surface 1-to-1.
Many colleagues who first came to the iPad with the iPad mini said they could make friends with this iPad - especially the ones that are too big and too expensive.
The iPad mini is essentially a smaller iPad 2 with modern camera, more sound, better radio connection at a much cheaper price (whereby a smartphones empty, the smaller is not always 'cheap' means). The quality and look of the device does not give rise to criticism, the runtime fits.

If you have hesitated on the iPad because of the price or the size, can access the iPad mini. Whose performance goes beyond anything, the Android competition gets more hardware for less money, with the software is not necessarily the case.
Personally, the handiness of the iPad mini is the reason to go away from the 10-inch device. While a big tablet is still considering whether to take it here and there, the question does not arise with the little one: you just take it.
