The top theme of the Photokina 2012 in the full format range was presented by Nikon and Canon with the new low-cost models D600 and EOS 6D. Both full-format cameras move from the price in the region by 2,000 euros and thus lower the entry price into the professional class. In addition, Sony surprised with unusual full-format news.

D600 - inherited from the Nikon professionals
The D600 is Nikon's smallest and lightest digital SLR with full format. The price of 2,150 euros makes the 24.3 megapixel camera affordable for a wider circle of photographers. The D600 has inherited from the Nikon professional cameras some of the latest technologies, such as the image processor Expeed 3 of the top model D4. According to Nikon, the D600 is expected to be available in September.
EOS 6D - Canon's most compact full-size camera
A few days after Nikon's presentation, Canon responded with the EOS 6D also with a cheap full-format DSLR, with only 770 grams is somewhat lighter than the competitor. The Canon entry-level model has a newly developed 20.2 megapixel CMOS sensor on board, which should score with better light sensitivity. Canon also puts the EOS 6D on very compact dimensions, low weight - and a small price: The camera costs around 2,000 euros without a kit. The release date is not set yet.
Full-format variety at Sony
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 and the NEX-VG900 have a 24-megapixel Exmor CMOS sensor as well as the new DSLR-flagship SLT-A99. The A99 also features a newly developed AF system with two phase detection systems to enable faster and more accurate recordings.
