Yahoo mail hacked: Hackers search emails for contact addresses

If you have an actively used e-mail account with Yahoo, you should quickly change your access data (passwords, security questions, etc.). Yahoo warns its users in a recent announcement before a large-scale, coordinated attack by unknown hackers. These should have access to countless accounts and systematically search them. Yahoo does not provide information on the exact number of people affected.

Yahoo's analysis has shown that cybercriminals use malicious software to scan e-mail accounts by name and address of recently contacted people. As a leak of the user data Yahoo suspects a compromised database "from third parties". Who or what company is meant by this is not communicated. There is no evidence that the cybercriminals could have deceived the access identifiers directly from the Yahoo servers.

If you as a Yahoo mail user have not yet received a request from the operator to change your access data, you should do so directly. The Internetriese specifies to reset affected accounts so that users can assign a new password directly at the next login attempt. When possible, Yahoo also sends e-mail to secondary accounts and SMS messages with appropriate notifications and prompts. As a further measure, Yahoo promises to set up additional security mechanisms in its own systems.

Yahoo is cooperating with the authorities to find the perpetrators in a timely manner. In addition, Yahoo provides a not-to-be-ignored hint: Users should never use the combination of their email address and the associated password for other websites or services. This makes it much easier for hackers to get personal data and damage. You can read the message from Yahoo about the security incident at this point in the English original.
